If the blood test indicates diabetes, the patient can begin to be treated.  Treatment for diabetes can help patients feel better and reduce their chances of having the very serious health problems that can result from diabetes.

If the blood test indicates pre-diabetes, health care providers can counsel their patients on how they can reduce their chances of developing diabetes.  These patients are also eligible to be screened again for diabetes in six months.

If the blood test indicates that the blood sugar level is in the normal range, patients and their health care providers can discuss ways to maintain good health.  These patients are eligible to be screened again for diabetes in 12 months.
