Vision Service Plan (VSP), a Medicare Diabetes Screening Project national partner, worked in conjunction with the Columbus Research Foundation, the Center for Health Transformation’s Georgia Project, and Novo Nordisk, to launch an innovative program designed to assess whether a free vision care program would intake an underserved population with high risk of diabetes into healthcare.
As part of the program, VSP vision care providers in Columbus, Georgia provided free comprehensive eye exams, glasses, and health screenings to approximately 2,000 area residents. Patients found to have signs of diabetic retinopathy or diabetes risk factors were referred to their primary care physician for a medical evaluation and to the Columbus Research Foundation for diagnosis and additional testing.
