Dominique Wilkins coaches local Atlanta residents about Medicare’s free diabetes screening benefit.
- Kickoff Event, Downtown
On November 9, 2010, Dominique Wilkins, Congressman John Lewis (D-5th), Atlanta City Council President Caesar Mitchell and key community partners participated in a community forum at the Loudermilk Center. This forum was designed to encourage Georgia’s older adults to take advantage of Medicare’s free diabetes screenings and featured leaders in the areas of health care, diabetes, and senior services. Representatives from the American Diabetes Association, Healthcare Leadership Council, the Atlanta Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) were on-hand to stress the importance of diabetes screening, detection and prevention.
- Atlanta Hawks Games
Around the globe, people recognize November 14th as World Diabetes Day. Diabetes is one of the world’s most serious and growing health problems. That’s why programs like the Medicare Diabetes Screening Project are so important.
The Atlanta Hawks showed its support for MDSP and World Diabetes Day (WDD) at the November 12th and 14th home games at Philips Arena. During the games, MDSP representatives and volunteers distributed educational materials and spoke with older adults about Medicare’s free screenings. A public service announcement about the Medicare benefit, featuring Dominique Wilkins and Atlanta-area citizens, was also premiered.
